Katrina’s Cross: After the Storm
This cross was in the church we visited Easter Sunday and I wanted to share the story behind it. I was initially drawn to the cross because I’m such a lover of Mosaic art, but after learning the story behind it, it became even more beautiful to me.
It was created from debris of broken glass and pottery collected around the First United Methodist Church in Gulfport, Mississippi and Arlean Hall, Gulfside, after Hurricane Katrina. It’s a metaphor for hope and new life after a disaster. It also raises questions about our place in creation and God’s creative process. It reminds us that the world has and always will change, and that change may be necessary for new growth.
